Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
Because of all the demand for raw materials from China, the price of ammo has been gone up dramatically in the last 6 months. So to offset my expenditures on practicing to maintain proficient, I've been using using the .22 long rifle as a substitute. It enables the fundamentals of marksmanship to be maintained, except that distance of 100 yards is best avoided if you're an accuracy freak.
But even the price of .22's has gone up in the last month. I was able to buy a box of Federal 550 rd. value pack at Walmart for $9.83 a month ago, now that price is over $12, and they didn't even have any in stock a few days ago. They did however have some of the Remington 550 value packs for $12.32, so I bought all 11 boxes of them. That gives me enough .22 ammo for a few months worth of practice, maybe more if I detect there is a shortage of it. I've pretty much abandoned centerfire shooting and even the reloading components prices have gotten out of hand. How are things in your part of the country? Are you still practicing a lot with the high ammo costs? Or are you stockpiling, knowing that it will never be cheaper than it is now? |
Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
Unless you have more ammo than God .it would make more sense to stockpile ammo.
prices are going to jump 22-60% THIS YEAR I would also purchase extra mutliple high cap mags for all you guns and few you dont own but are common..... as the prices start to rise and and the dummycrats take over a UNDERGROUND MARKET is going to emerge and this stuff will be like another form of gold. Mark my words.it is coming If you have to practice .........use the least ammount.....and also the cheapest you have....SAVE YOUR HOLLOWPOINTS!! .I smell a ban coming!! Like gold and silver: get as much of it as you can........hard times ahead for sure T |
Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
www.ammoman.com Is a great site and it is cheap if you buy in bulk. I plan on getting another couple k for my 308 and 223. Ammo prices sure wont get cheaper thats for sure.

Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
Not only is ammoman overpriced, but they have TERRIBLE customer service. They have FLAT STOLEN from many, cursed customers, called them liars, etc, etc.
Buy at your own risk. |

Where did you get this information? I am curious because I am about to order a huge shipment from them. Thanks |

Their prices on 308, 7.62x39, and 223 are often BETTER than the Grass Valley, CA group that sells WHOLESALE at gunshows here in the west. I have heard of a few disgruntled customers--two sides to the story, I am sure. News tends to quickly spread all over the internet to different forums...so the impact is overblown IMO. Besides, working with the general public can be a real PITA sometimes. I would certainly recommend going elsewhere if you ain't happy... |

You can find similar stories on every major firearms forum. You can also find better prices. If you want to buy from 'Eric' or 'Marty' or whatever 'the ammoman's' name really is, that's your business. I've done quite a bit of business with them with no problems, but not any more. If you rob my brothers, you might as well rob me. |
Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
I ordered 30 carbine from Widener's this week, beat them by 33 bucks a case, delivered.
380 auto from somewhere in Ohio, beat them by 26 bucks per case, delivered. I haven't bought their exact brand of 7.62MM (still brass/boxer/nc), but I bought some last month for over 100frns per case less. Century beat them by 70frns per spam can (1080 rounds) on 5.45x39, delivered. I haven't bought their exact brand of 5.56 (still Brass/boxer/NC), but I beat them by 49 bucks per case, delivered. I can beat their Lawman 45 ACP by 40 bucks at a local Sporting goods. Wow, I stock too many calibers.:bear_w00t: |
Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
Gawd I cant wait till I get my job situation right so I can start to load up on this stuff!!!

Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
I use www.sportsmansguide.com , get the membership to get club price, then use coupons to knock down shipping costs. They also have good milsurp stuff and outdoor eq.
I agree with loading up on .22 - cheapest way to keep proficiency while saving more expensive stuff for fine tuning. Mr. Mayhem - no comments please  |
Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
I think anyone who is spending their spare time running through ammo like it was water and would always be available is "short sighted". Actually, just dumb.
Know how to hold a good sight picture? How to do a compressed break? How to call your shots? That is about all you need to be able to do. Think you have to keep your skills so well-tuned and ready that you spend every spare moment practicing? Then, nothing you can do will give you the confidence you seek. Got ALL your other needs tended to? Probably not. Guns and proficiency is not the Be-All of survivalism in a collapse. You had better have gear and skills useful to others if you aren't setup on your own homestead. Macho guys with AKs and trigger-time skills will be a dime a dozen and deployed as such, or shot on sight for being not much more than armed to the teeth hoboes, or worse, looters. Not only are you wearing out barrels you may never be able to replace by incessantly "practicing", but you are basically doing something akin to using Pre-65 quarters and dimes in a vending machine. Ammo will have a currency value. Stockpile this stuff. Check your zeros and scope mounts, Check magazines, but wow, don't run through your ammo like it was water. Next time you go to turn the tap, it might be empty. |
Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
Anyone have a good price for quality 44 mag? Having trouble finding it anywhere for under $22.00 / box of 50.

Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
I bought all mine a couple of years ago. I can't believe today's prices...

Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
I just stocked up on a crapload of .22lr, 9mm, and 5.56mm. Got the ar ammo from wideners.com. Bought all my 9mm from Dicks sporting goods for 6.98 a box (50 rds). Unfortanely, I don't get to shoot as much as I would like. Next is a .22LR upper for my AR15. I guess any shooting is better than none.

Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
I bought my ammo back in 2002 when it was cheap.
Only a little bit of gun range practice since. Ammo prices are thru the roof these days. A good thing inflation has not effected the price of my concealed carry permit. :D MLS |
Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
ammoman was the cheapest back in the day, now I can get anything he sells much cheaper elsewhere.
If I lived in an area where shipping was outrageous and considered 'zone 5' for everyone, than I would buy from ammoman, as it stands I'm 1 state away from SOG and aimsurplus and century has flat 9.99 dealer shipping if you have C&R FFL. Makes no sense to waste all that extra money at ammoman. I shoot alot more .22lr than before... I also got a bunch of hicaps for my 10/22 to easy that hicap issue,. Now when I go out I still shoot alot of 9mm, I love it... 5.45x39 is still dirt cheap and I'm planning on buying more with my tax 'refund'... Like I said, if you live in normal shipping rate zones don't waste money at ammoman, buy elsewhere. |
Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
Stocking up here. Case of 5.56 delivered today and debating buying another right now. I've got about 1500 rounds that are 15 years old, and will probably use a few hundred of them at the range as soon as it gets warmer to make sure the sights are set, and to introduce a couple friends to shooting.
I'm looking at a ruger 10/22 and 22lr pistol now because they are fun enough to shoot and a little cheaper to buy ammo for. Have bought multiple cases through ammoman now and in the past and it's always shipped in a couple of days and arrived in good conditiion within a week. For those looking for AR mags, there is a good deal here (9.49) per new 30 rnd mag- USGI by D&H: https://www.44mag.com/prodinfo.asp?number=DH30G |
Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
I just bought a bunch of those mags from 44mag.com. I also bought some pmags which I have to admit I like much better and use more often than the USGI mags. That is a good price for AR mags though.

Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
Elijah, that's another reason to hate Ammoman. Their "Type 57" magazines are NOT. They are ininexpensive commercial M14 mags of reasonable quality. Why they can't advertise them as such, and would rather LIE to their customers (as Sportsman's Guide and Midway also do) is beyond me.

Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
There seems to be a resurgence of .22 shooting with people being squeased from all sides. If you enjoy shooting, how can you not own a .22?
It's getting hard to justify cracking off a C-note every time you go to the range. If you don't have one...get one now! If you like to work on guns, get the Ruger 10/22, spend a hundred bucks and a few hours of enjoyment working on it, to make yourself one sweet shooter. If you want any tips on how, just ask! |
Re: Increasing ammo costs-now I shoot rimfire
j&g sales in prescott arizona have some good deals also. i like their customer service and attitude. have a stock, sight and hi cap mag coming for the ruger 10 22. sugarpants said to pick out birthday present this year. not much better than exercising 2 amendment rights on regular basis. believe prices are up due to militaty demands on domestic manufacturers, and copper and lead increases. buying imported 7.62 x 39, cci for rimfire, federal/cci for the .38spl. lee loader works fine for .38 spl, slow, but portable. can shoot blackpowder in this caliber if neccessary.
